New Lego type concrete
Reinforced concrete beams are structural elements that were designed to carry transverse external loads. They are long, however, and too heavy and contractors need large machinery to transport and install them.
For the last few years researchers at Spain Polytechnic University of Valencia experimented with a new alternative to classic concrete beams. The new model has 80% less weight and saves money and time on labour and materials. The most innovative moment was that those beams could be printed and assembled right on site. The researchers use recycled plastic as a raw material, making it very ecologically friendly.
Jose Ramon Albiol, lecturer at the Higher Technical School of Construction Engineering (ETSIE) of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, patented his product in October, 2020. New polymeric profile is reinforced with elements that ensure the structure’s rigidity and have no metallic components to prevent corrosion and decrease the weight.
