House Insulation: upgrade or not upgrade

Most Canadian provinces have pretty long winters almost every year. High snow levels, strong winds, freezing temperatures could be harmful. That’s why our homes must save us from the weather. Well built houses need proper insulation to keep the warm inside even a frozen storm is outside.

The first simple test is a touch test. Inside wall has to be warm and dry. If it’s cold or damp you definitely need new insulation. Another nuance is room temperatures. If one room is cooler than the other you need a contractor to install some insulation

One more symptom of your house suffering from bad insulation is snow melting on your roof. That means you pay to heat the outside but not your home. Check your attic, possibly you have to add some insulation there. Actually, energy bills could tell you the same. It’s good to have a statistic of your payments on hand. Once you see that amount of your energy bill sharply increased don’t lose time and ask for a professional to check your property. Even one little hole could cause an air leak and you lose your money.

Those small air leaks could be a reason for a growing ice dams. They look beautiful on your house glitters but also a symptom of bad roof insulation.

Once you discover on your own that some spots in your home need proper insulation, call a contractor who inspects some hidden spots to be sure. Sometimes you could have some other hidden problems that you don’t think about and professional review would be helpful.
