The history of construction spans a long way from the Neolithic period till present time. At first, the problem was to find good materials to build shelter to defend from predators. Later people found that interlocking stones makes better buildings and started to call them homes. That technique became very popular around the world – Europe, Asia, South America, etc.

But Egyptian Pyramids are maybe the most famous ancient construction project. And even at almost 4000 years old it's in very good condition. But for regular houses people used more simple techniques and material – mud brick baked in the sun. Not many of them we can see today.

We have to say "thank you" to Greeks who added plumbing and central heating to our homes. They were the first ones who started to use urban planning and roof tiles. But one of the favorite materials of new homes – cement – was invented by Romans. They also made some other innovations like arches, sawmills and double glazed windows.

Our homes are not just a shelter anymore. It's a place where we spend most of our lives (especially today). Every generation adds new elements to construction, architecture or design. Some communities turned back to the ancient building methods as a fashion trend to prevent continuous climate change and help with the housing crisis. But all of them need renovations from time to time to keep the structure safe and make houses homes, not just shelters.
