Drywall’s little secrets

Drywall installation is a process that hides some little things that usually never comes to your mind. Those small parts are still very important and need to be done properly. Drywall screws are needed to secure drywall sheets to wall studs or ceiling joists. Main measurements of drywall screws are length, gauge, thread.

Choosing of length depends on a drywall thickness. Usually sheets of ½-inch thick used for residential construction. You’ll need 1¼-inch or 1 ⅝-inch screws for that drywall. Thinner drywall needs shorter screws and so forth.

There are two types of drywall screws threads: coarse and fine. First one works better for wood studs and fine threads are better for metal studs.

For most projects gauges of drywall screws are #6 (=0.1380-inch) and #8 (=0.1640-inch). Those numbers refer to the diameter of screws. Drywall screws are sold by weight, and quantity could vary, but estimating for the project usually go by numbers. You’ll need 32 screws per one sheet of drywall and one pound of 1 ⅝-inch coarse #6 threads contain about 200 screws.

Choosing proper screws can help you finish the job faster.
